Engagement, Effectiveness & Efficiency: Energize Your Personal Librarian Program

    Natale, Jennifer; Resnis, Eric
Miami University Libraries created a Personal Librarian program to supplement our liaison system in support of student success and information literacy advancement. Our program was designed to integrate into university curriculum and build toward connections with subject librarians. The program was designed to be efficient by use of a project management tool and to be assessed by mostly existing data. Participants can expect to learn how a Personal Librarian program can be integrated into a first-year university course, how to utilize a project management tool to administer a program, and methods for assessment. Our target audience includes those who want to start a program or improve their program with new ideas and methods of assessment.

Promoting the Use of the Library Science Collection for Professional Development

    Natale, Jennifer
As librarians, we understand and appreciate the value of reading for professional development in order to meet the needs of our faculty and students, learn something new, and to spark innovation and forward-thinking. As the selector of Library Science titles, I recognize the need to proactively encourage use of the collection. Busy schedules and work demands often push reading for professional development to the bottom of our priority list. Gone are the days when we had time to browse the physical stacks to find inspiration. I will share how I created a digital, browsable representation of our collection on LibGuides. The primary goal was to promote new acquisitions in the collection on a quarterly basis and offer an easy method to browse and link directly to catalog records and ebooks. The format has been positively received and shown increased usage of the collection.

    (2015-11-30) Natale, Jennifer; Millard, John
Staff development is the cornerstone of a vibrant and responsive library system that meets the needs of today’s students. In lean times, spending effort on staff development can often be overlooked beyond the initial training of new staff members. We will share our development of two key staff training initiatives addressing first-year staff members and future library leaders. Semester-long, New Team Member Training focuses on group work and how individuals can be productive contributors to the library system. Year-long, Team Leader Training focuses on leadership development and the skills needed to lead our library into the future. We will share the structure and foundations of our trainings including how we incorporated diversity learning opportunities into our curriculum. We will also showcase our online resource to promote staff development for all levels of our organization. Participants will walk away with tangible ideas to implement on your campus.

Change as Opportunity: Re-Vamping LibGuides to Better Engage Students

(2014-11-17) Bazeley, Jennifer W; Natale, Jennifer; Miami University Libraries; bazelejw@miamioh.edu; natalejj@miamioh.edu
Change can be a positive opportunity to evaluate how we engage students with our services and contribute to their success. We will share our experiences surrounding our migration to LibGuides 2.0 and how it presented an opportunity for the library to update and improve not only on format and function, but on content. Usability testing guided our decisions in LibGuides 1.0 and was used again to analyze student preferences through a direct comparison with LibGuides 2.0. Results were used to make decisions on format and content and will be shared along with the Standards we created to improve usability, consistency and accessibility. We will discuss our methods for training staff to ensure a cohesive approach for using LibGuides to engage students. This presentation will discuss simple but effective improvements and will give audience members a framework for coordinating and implementing their LibGuides efforts.
